The Time is Still Now

I have the glorious fortune to be able to spend much of my time in the company of incredibly smart and incredibly passionate individuals who absolutely make me appear to be a much better person that I probably am. I know enough to recognize this and embrace it.

During the past several weeks, I’ve been engaged in conversations about the world we want to see and create. We’ve discussed and debated and challenged and encouraged each other to envision a world in which the potential of each of us can be fully realized and we can all brilliantly flourish.

I was inspired to revisit the remarks of Hillary Rodham Clinton, delivered on September 5, 1995 at the U.N. 4th World Conference on Women. In her words:

What we are learning around the world is that if women are healthy and educated, their families will flourish. If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If women have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their families will flourish. And when families flourish, communities and nations do as well.

Her words continue to resonate today. I strongly encourage you to read them and to watch them. The abuses levied upon women are violations of human rights. As long as equality eludes us, so will the achievement of a prosperous world.

On May 3, 2012, the Membership of AWP adopted a Values Statement. This underlying set of core beliefs help to define AWP and AWP’s work. It guides AWP’s behavior and shapes the strategies that are pursued in the face of both challenges and opportunities. AWP values equality. AWP believes each and every one of us must collaborate to create a new society based in equal power and rights.

The time is still now. How do you value equality in the world you are actively creating?
