October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and next Saturday, October 2nd, A Woman’s Place kicks it off by sponsoring its first Domestic Violence Awareness walk, “Walk to Empower”. The walk takes place in Doylestown, the home of A Woman’s Place, and the county seat of Bucks County. A Woman’s Place is the only domestic violence organization in Bucks County , PA and provides comprehensive free, private, and confidential service, support, education, outreach, and advocacy to victims of domestic abuse and violence and their children and the community. The walk begins in the parking lot of Central Bucks West High School and is a little over 2 miles. Half way point is at Bucks County courthouse in the center of Doylestown and ends back at the high school parking lot. The first one hundred registrants will be receiving free tee shirts. Seventy-five of the tee shirts will be purple and twenty-five will be black to visually show the very alarming statistic that, “One in every four teens, both boys and girls, will experience dating violence before graduating from high school.” Unhealthy relationship behaviors often start early and lead to a lifetime of abuse. That’s according to Choose Respect, a national initiative to help adolescents and young teens age 11-14 form healthy relationships to prevent dating abuse.
Shannon Traffican, Teen Chair and Organizer for the walk created a wonderful video to promote the event.
